However, I’ve recently noticed another trend in Twitter usage that increases its viral marketing capabilities through the use of hashtags.

What’s a hashtag, anyway? Also called the pound sign, the hashtag (#) is added to a tweet as a way of creating trackable categories, groups, or topics that others can use to search for info using the Twitter Search feature. One of the most common uses of the hashtag is to tweet what’s happening at an event or conference. The event organizer will request all attendees use a specific hashtag, i.e. #yourevent, when tweeting about the event to your followers. So, then, someone who isn’t present at the event but wants to follow what’s happening there can simply search for #yourevent and see what’s going on and what participants are saying and sharing about the event.

Anyone can create a hashtag by putting hashtag (#) in front of anything. If you log into Twitter and look in the right-hand column, you’ll see the Trending Topics, many of which can be tracked with a hashtag. How can you use this strategy to create more viral marketing for your business on Twitter? By creating a hashtag Twitter tips campaign.

Here are 6 steps to help you create your own Twitter hashtag campaign:

1. Research. What kinds of tips would be appreciated by your target market? On what topics do you frequently receive questions from your clients? My target market is always asking questions about getting more traffic, so I decided to focus on traffic generation strategies.

2. Choose your name. Choose a short, simple name that reflects your brand and what you’re offering. Otherwise, your tweeted tips will intermingle with the other hashtag group using that name. I quickly checked and discovered that no one was using #OBUTrafficTip, so that’s what I chose.

3. Create your tips. You can easily pick your tips out of an article or blog post you’ve created. In my case, I had purchased a PLR ebook that I used as a basis for my tips. Remember that your tips need to be less than 140 characters, including the hashtag name you’ve chosen and any links you include.

4. Link to relevant info. You get the most mileage out of these tips if you link the tips to something relevant to that tip. For example, if you have a bank of articles, each tip might link to an article you’ve written that has more details about the tip. For maximum exposure, you’ll want to link to info on your site or your blog rather than to the posting of an article in an article directory.

5. Upload the tips into TweetLater.com. This type of campaign is easily managed using TweetLater.com. Simply upload your completed tips and set them to distribute once a day or (several times a week) over the upcoming weeks by postdating them into the future. In this way you put these tips on autopilot and they post themselves.

6. Let them begin to work their magic. It may take awhile for them to catch on, but eventually others will begin to retweet your tips as useful information they want their followers to access. As with most marketing strategies, consistence is the key here to your success.

Some caveats:

When you first begin to use Twitter, you’ll likely find yourself overwhelmed by the plethora of pure chatter you encounter that doesn’t mean anything to you. That’s okay; you can learn to ignore these people and screen it out so that you only get what you want to see.

Finally, Twitter can be addicting in a bad way. Make sure you turn it off and reengage with real-life on a regular basis. It’s fun to use, sure, but only if you use it as an asset, not as an addiction.

With that said, why not try Twitter? It can be a blast (both professionally and personally) if you use it right.

People are telling how they are enjoying a cup of coffee or how they loved a movie and so on. Twitter isn't going to go away. That is certain. And getting twitter followers appears to be a popular goal for many marketers, of course. Are you one those who is making twitter the biggest social networking tool there is on the internet? And are you really getting anything out of it?

I learned from using twitter that I like it and hate at the same time. It's so easy and simple to send a short 140 character message to the world. It's like sending a message in a bottle, but a gazillion times faster. And what happens then? Surprise: you are getting twitter followers! And that just feel kinda good doesn't it?

So what happens then? You send more tweets over twitter, you learn that getting followers is fun, and then something else occurs: you discover you can now send messages to them about your business, with links and all. And now you are not just getting twitter followers, now your sites are getting twitter traffic! Your eyes open!

And then you're hooked. You might find yourself on twitter for ages, interacting, laughing, reading, wondering, and marketing of course, as there is such a thing as twitter marketing. Twitter becomes a force for getting traffic, but also for your social life. But is this wise?

I found that I simply started to spend way too much time on twitter. Like I had no life at all apart from twitter. The excitement never truly went away, but I did start to notice that I really needed a 'twitter-break' sometimes. Take your distance for a while. Otherwise you think your happiness starts to depend on it, and that's rubbish, it doesn't. Luckily you can also twitter automatically (see at the of this article).

But is twitter bad for your mental health? I don't think so. I still feel its totally enjoyable to receive twitter messages and send them, and to get more and more twitter followers and twitter traffic. My websites are getting more and clicks from this twitter and that is pretty cool!

So I'll be going on with twitter for a while yet, and have now found ways to increase my twitter following by thousands! It's amazing. Make I'm somewhat addicted, but with taking a healthy break sometimes, all is under control.
