Twitter Learnings For Social Search


When I follow conference events such as media140 online I’m always impressed by how quickly I’m able to get a grasp of what’s happening. It’s great to see people sharing information so freely and I probably learn more about Twitter and where it’s taking us in a few hours than if I’d spent an entire month reading and researching. It reminds me of the importance of bringing people together to discuss topics and it makes me think about how Twitter is revolutionizing the way in which we use the web, more specifically it causes me to reflect on how Twitter is affecting the area that we work in, social search.

For those not fully familiar with social search it’s about harnessing user-generated information to help people find what they want, it’s not new online and is age old off-line where for most of us asking for people’s advice is second nature. Approaches vary and for simplicity we can briefly split them in to three separate areas. First there’s reordering or amending algorithmic search results with user input, example proponents of this are Sproose and more recently Zakta. Secondly, there’s the option to incorporate relevant updates, tweets or reviews into your search results, something Google and Bing announced recently. Thirdly there’s the ability to find people as opposed to pages who can help you find what you’re looking for, this is the approach that Aardvark and we at Cofacio have chosen to adopt. The three approaches are complimentary so while the first and second method help us define the ‘what’, the third approach might be seen more as identifying the ‘who’ we need to know

So what’s the big deal with social search? Well when Eric Schmidt claimed recently at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo Orlando 2009 that how to rank real-time social content is “the great challenge of the age”, in my opinion it’s not so much a sign of where he thinks things are going in the future but more a recognition that traditional search no longer works for an increasing amount of the web’s content, namely user generated information on Twitter and social networks. Finding stuff is one thing but where one search engine really wins over another is in relevancy, so while Google or Bing can incorporate tweets, updates and customer reviews, the problem they face, and as Schmidt points out, is how can they rank them, how can they break through the noise and make them relevant? It’s this problem that practitioners of social search are trying to resolve, and I would argue that it’s an area where we can take 3 key learnings from Twitter and tweeters.

1. It doesn’t all have to be about the quality of the search result

When Stephen Fry talks about Twitter being social and the almost inherent need people have to be social and interact with others, this is a very important lesson social search needs to take on board. Up to now the debate has focused on the quality of the results and while it’s important to look at which method produces the most relevant results, we shouldn’t forget that collaborative social search offers further benefits that go beyond simply finding an answer. Asking other people or searching jointly is social and can be fun, and by engaging with other people as we look for things opportunities arise for cooperation. Searching with other people also helps you think through problems in different ways and allows for distributed cognition which improves cognitive processing and concept formulation. Following this through, social search solutions need to think about how people want to interact when searching, it’s adding another layer on top of the standard search experience.

2. It doesn’t need to be behind registration, people will happily search for things on an open platform

When we first sat down to look at how people would share searches we assumed that people wouldn’t be prepared to search for things openly on the web, in my mind Twitter has proved this theory to be incorrect. There’s stuff people would be wise not to discuss in public but many of the things that we look for on an everyday basis we will happily share, what’s more, we’ll happily give advice in public as Twitter has also demonstrated. What this means for social search is that we are no longer limited to solutions that leverage the knowledge base of your network, but instead we can now look to leverage the knowledge of anyone on the web. Users are not used to, and shouldn’t need to, log in to perform a search, that’s the result we found when we launched a prototype of Cofacio back in April 2009. In a similar way, the way people search on Twitter would suggest that we don’t need to display lengthy profiles and give over personal information in order to interact with other people on simple topics such as which is the best fish and chip shop in London or which play is worth watching in the West End.

3. Ranking people or people’s comments requires a different approach to how you rank a web page

Choosing whose advice to take or who to listen to on a certain topic is something quite personal, every person will have their own criteria and method for doing this. Ranking people on the basis of the amount of other people who follow them, which is similar to ranking pages on the amount of other pages that link to them, seems overly simplistic. On Twitter I’d argue that it’s a person’s behaviour, what they tweet about, as well as our assessment of their credibility based on follower numbers and their reputation that’s important when deciding whether we should listen to their advice on a particular given subject. Social search then needs to come up with ways in which the community can recognize individuals as experts on specific areas by using both explicit and implicit ratings. Other people’s opinions are important but how that person behaves is also key. This recognition system would then guide users with regards who they should listen to without limiting their ability to judge for themselves.

Concluding, there is one thing that was said at the London 140 conference which is key, Twitter is about people, and with the rise of social media the same can be said of the internet, it’s going to be more and more about people. The result is that search engines developed to find us information and products are no longer suitable tools for this growing social web. You cannot scrape people’s profiles as if they were goods on a shop shelf and you cannot rank people as more or less relevant as if they were information. In light of this, if search companies want to be useful in this new era of the people’s web they need to reinvent themselves to some extent, I would suggest that they need to think more about people’s behaviour online, and for me there’s no better place to start than with Twitter.

Website 101 – Create a Twitter Profile That Works

Your Twitter profile page effectively becomes your home page on Twitter. Take the time to set-up your Twitter profile page up properly. This will be time well spent and can make a difference to your web activities and online presence in general.

Firstly, don’t just rush in and create a profile, only to find that you have to start again down the line because you have missed some vital points.

Before you start, make sure you understand how your choices for Username and other details of your profile, will affect the impact of your profile page.

Your profile page will have:

Areas Twitter Controls:

- Header area
- Tweet area
- Bio area

Areas You Control:
- Background image (large image)
- Profile image (small image like a photo of you or your company/enterprise logo)

Areas with text you have some control over:
- Username – displayed by Twitter but must be selected carefully (see below)
- Tweet content
- Bio content details

Things to take note of, include:

Background Image

Your background image needs to be specially designed to ensure the best impact possible. It has to either repeat or be designed to fit the left and right narrow columns. The background color should also match your brand colors. (There are a number of templates available on the web for Twitter profile pages. They are usually in Photoshop format. Google this phrase “Twitter Profile page template’ as a starting point.

Don’t forget screen resolution is a factor! My advice is to keep the image as simple as possible because the image is not like a HTML web page. This will affect your profile page by not producing a consistent spacing and format when viewing screen resolution changes. Make sure that you test a sample image on various common resolutions (especially the common ones – 1024X786, 1280×720 or 1280×768)

Your logo can be loaded as the profile image even though this is pretty small
The most visible text will be your Username – so this is an important word. See below for tips about selection of username.

Signing up

Signing up is quick and painless. The first 2 selections you must make are your Name and Username. Make sure that you choose these to reflect your business, venture or whatever you are looking to publicize.

Remember that your username will become a permanent part of your persona on the web. So choose well. Current Twitter username rules are a bit tricky.

1) Pick a Good Full Name

This name will appear on your profile page and you can use quite along name with various punctuation elements.

2) Pick a Good Username

i) Username cannot be longer than 15 characters

ii) You have to use an underscore to separate words

iii) No dashes or spaces are allowed. (Also brackets and full stops)

If your company is ABC Fishing Equipment then a good place to start would be: twitter.com/ABC_Fishing or even twitter.com/ABC_Fishing _Equ

Despite the best practice advice to always use dashes as a separator when working on the web, in Twitters case you have to use the underscore.

3) Your Bio

This is really important and you have to have your say in 160 characters. Best practice would be to design and layout your words in a word processor first. This will ensure that your spelling is correct and force you spend a few minutes thinking about what your bio needs to say.

4) Your Home Page Link

Unfortunately this will be given a NoFollow status by Twitter and thus will bring no real SEO inbound link value. However it can still be read and used by human visitors to your Twitter profile page, so make sure you get the link right by cutting and pasting it into a browser address bar to ensure it goes to your site.

5) Using Your Twitter Link

You can now start using your Twitter link on your website and in other places. Place a call to action prompt on your home page to say something like “Follow us on Twitter”.

A Brief History of Twitter and Tools to Make Tweeting Easier

Twitter was founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, practically making it an overnight success story. Odeo co-founder Evan Williams left Google in October 2004. Along with other former Odeo employees, Williams and Stonate founded Obvious Corp. in 2006. In April of 2007, Twitter was born as a separate company. Xanga, Blogger, Odeo, and Obvious were also created by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. The CEO of Twitter was Jack Dorsey until October of 2008, when he moved to the role of chairman of the board, while Williams assumed the role of CEO.

The URL twitter.com has existed since 2001. In February 2005, the white page got a logo. It was a simple little blue "Twitter" logo. Nothing else happened until October, 2006. That is when the Twitterface was finally unveiled.

Since 2006, Twitter has grown at a stupendous rate. Twitter has become the de facto micro-blogging software, with users in the dozens of millions.

The term for the blog posts you make using Twitter, which can only be a maximum of 140 characters, is "twitter." A tweeting campaign needs to be systematic, with multiple posts made daily. 1. Get a website-$80 a year or less

If you've got one-great-make sure its updated. If you don't have one you need two things to get one up by the end of day. You need a domain name and then domain hosting. Why? How? Oh my! Here's how to make it really simple. Again, you'll need WordPress and the Atahualpa theme installed at www.yourdomain.com/blog (ask your hosting provider how to do this if you don't know how). Then 3 times a week- type a brief message/article/how-to tip/customer interview/monthly special as a blog post. You can google things like �blog post ideas for small businesses' and get a lot of tips on things to blog about.

3. Create a Facebook Page for Your Business-FREE

Get your business a Fan Page set up on Facebook. Go to: http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php and walk through the step for setting up a Fan Page. After you set up a Fan Page-send an email to all your current clients and customers asking them to join. Whenever you make a blog post-send an update to your fans. Also keep fans updated on specials or discounts that your business might have. Think about offering a "Facebook Fans Only" special.

4. Create a Facebook Group-FREE

A business Facebook Group will let you communicate and get to know your current customers. A group allows you to privately message members much like someone being on an email list. You can also have discussions in the group about products or services that you offer.

5. Create a Twitter Account-FREE

Local News stations, police departments and local newspaper have started using Twitter to keep followers up-to date. After you set up a Twitter account, invite all your current clients and Facebook Page friends to follow you on Twitter. Then begin watching the conversation. Start by re-tweeting what others have said. That means copying something that some else has said in your tweet update box and putting a "RT" in front of the message then sending it out to your followers. Then tweet about things that are going on with other local businesses that are tweeting.

6. Start or continue your email newsletter-$120 or less

If you are blogging this can seamlessly be tied together so that every blog you create automatically gets emailed out to your newsletter subscribers. I recommend iContact for this as their service allows for autoresponders, email newsletters, surveys and RSS feeds. 7. Set Up Google Alerts-FREE

Go to alerts.google.com (you need to have a gmail account-create one if you don't already have) and type in the name of your business in the �search terms'. Select Type: "Comprehensive". Select �How Often": As-it-Happens and have it delivered to your gmail address. This service will send you an email anytime your company name is mentioned.

Also set up google alerts for general industry terms or products that are related to your business. This will provide you with ideas for writing blog posts as well as quickly keep you updated on what's being said about your business and your competition.
