Messaging services are now commonplace, but Twitter has developed into a world-wide phenomenon. I am not here to discuss Twitter’s past, but how you can use it in the future: not only to communicate with people, but to make money and turn it into a marketing tool more effective than any that have gone before.

I fully understand how Google works (as well as anybody who is not employed by Google can), and Twitter is Google bait! This will only last for a short time, and even if you only have a blog that you want to promote you must learn how to use Twitter to promote it. If you have a Squidoo lens, just the same: Twitter can be use to give you visitors.

So how is that? The question you have to answer yourself when you tweet on Twitter is who will see it? A tweet is not a web page, and is not listed on a search engine. It isn’t an email, or any other direct means of communication. The only people that will come across those short messages you send are those that are ‘following’ you. To do that, they must deliberately click a link so that they do so. Why should they?

Many newbies to Twitter make their tweets and they go nowhere because they don’t have any followers. Imagine if you could choose your own followers. I am not saying that Britney would follow you because if you check out Britney’s link you will see no tweets except hers and her manager’s and agent’s. TWITTER IS THE NEW KING OF SOCIAL NETWORKING

Something new has just happened.  Twitter has taken over.  Twitter is the new king of Social Networking.  There are two proofs.

PROOF #1 THAT TWITTER IS KING

A recent cover article in Fast Company Magazine was about how one young man is considered responsible for the success of now-president Barack Obama’s presidential election campaign.  How did one man do this?  Yes, through Twitter.  For the very first time in history, Social Networking was the key ingredient that thrust Obama into the lead.  How did he beat Hillary Clinton?  How did he then beat John McCain?  Using Twitter.  He has millions of followers on Twitter.  He can instantly communicate with all millions of them totally effortlessly and totally free of any cost and in a New Age and thrilling way.  He simply types 140 characters (like one short sentence) and the message is sent around the country and around the world.

PROOF #2 THAT TWITTER IS KING

Early 2008, Twitter had half a million followers.

Early 2009, Twitter had 7 million followers.

This pace is a 14-fold increase in one year!  Can you imagine such an increase?  If you, for example, earn $100,000 a year, then a 14-fold increase would mean that in one year you’d be earning $1.4 million dollars a year.  A 14-fold increase is equivalent to 1400%.  What company, what country, what person, what anything is growing at 1400%.  This is a phenomenon.

HOW DO I GET IN TO TWITTER?

The easiest way is to go to the Twitter.com website and sign up.  It’s totally easy and fast to open an account.  And, of course, it is free.  Then you need to follow someone.  To help you get started, click on FIND PEOPLE in the top right-hand corner.  Into the search box, type your friend’s name (to see if your friend is on Twitter) or the name of someone you respect or you could even type in my name as I am for sure on Twitter.  As soon as you find someone, click on the FOLLOW button.  Now you are following one person.  You are in the game.  Now, find and follow others you know and soon enough others will begin following you.  It’s fun and easy.

Get into it.  Twitter is the new King.

1. Don’t give people the impression you’re spamming them.

What I mean by this is don’t just repeatedly add people and spam them with the same cut and paste tweets telling them about whatever you’re selling.  I personally can’t stand when someone does this and immediately unfollow them or just completely ignore their tweets.  I know I’m not alone doing this either.  The better thing to do is to actually come across as a human being and not a spambot.  Mix up your business tweets with some personal tweets.  Talk about yourself a little bit and send @ messages to other people on your follower list.  Remember, fewer followers equals less traffic to your site.

2. Present your tweets in a creative way

This goes hand in hand with number one and could provide a boost in traffic from Twitter or increase followers.  I know it can seem difficult with only 140 characters or less but it shouldn’t be too hard for a person who has created their own content for a blog, an article, an e-book etc.  Also, spruce up your profile a bit.  The default Twitter background is ugly and the sidebar color is even uglier.  Do you really want people to think you’re too lazy to take 20 minutes to change up your profile?  It can have a negative effect on the way people view you and your level of service and dedication.  Also, always follow the people who add you as a follower.  Develop a connection with your Twitter followers and that will generate more traffic and more sales.

3. Always use hashtags and follow trending topics

A hashtag is a way to make your tweets clickable and easily searchable.  A hashtag is nothing more than adding the hash symbol (#) before a keyword or a keyphrase.  So, let’s say I tweet about the new episode of American Idol.  At the end of my tweet I would add #americanidol.  Doing this tagged that tweet associated with American Idol and added it to a live feed of up-to-the-minute tweets related to American Idol.  This leads me to trending topics.  Twitter keeps a list of the common tweets at the time on the right sidebar and this is very helpful at attracting new followers.  I mentioned earlier about mixing up your business tweets with personal tweets so if you keep an eye on that list and something catches your eye you can tweet about it throughout the day and be exposed to more Twitter users who could turn into followers and who might generate traffic for your site.

4. Add the Twitter widget to your site(s)/blog(s)

If you’re using other methods to promote this is essential to building your Twitter following and increasing Traffic to your site.  Why is this?  Well, I’m assuming you’re using an autoresponder so assuming that there will at least be certain people that visit your site have a Twitter account this is a way for you to send daily messages to them via your tweets.  It’s a fact that very few people obtain a program or a product immediately after being exposed to it.  It ordinarily takes seeing it a few times and thinking it over.
